The achilles tendon is the large tendon at the back of the ankle which connects the large calf muscles to the heel bone. It is this tendon that can become inflamed for various reasons, eg: training too much or too soon, training on hard surfaces, uphill activity, change in footwear, tendency to roll your feet inwards when walking or running.
